Frailty Prevention

What is Frailty?

Our working definition: Frailty is an age-related condition which may result in the loss of strength, speed, energy, activity, muscle mass, resilience to minor health strains and, subsequently, the loss of independence. FRAILTY IS NOT INEVITABLE YOU ARE NOT SET If identified early enough, certain losses may be reversible AND… Your mid and later-life activity can make a significant difference in preventing frailty. Frailty is described as a syndrome, which is a medical term for a condition that has a number of factors (The Frailty Index lists 70 different factors). Frailty is of great interest to health services due to the high proportion of 60 year olds in the population and the fact that this proportion is growing. Of the many challenges that frailty brings, losing one’s independence and eventually, one’s dignity are challenges that we want to help people forestall for as long as possible. A lot of great minds, including dedicated scientists, committed medics and concerned groups are involved in figuring out the ‘Whats, Whys and Hows’ of frailty, especially when it comes to treatment and prevention. Our study of the matter has revealed that physiotherapists have an important role to play, not just in fall-prevention but in helping a person function optimally, enabling them to maintain strength, activity, and capability.

Why Frailty Prevention Matters

Frailty is not an inevitable part of ageing. It is a gradual decline in physical capacity that can be slowed, stabilised, and in many cases improved with the right approach.

At its core, frailty is driven by changes in three key areas: strength, balance, and flexibility. These physical capacities underpin your ability to move well, stay independent, and engage fully in everyday life. When they begin to decline, simple tasks can become more difficult, confidence can reduce, and the risk of falls and injury increases.

The encouraging reality is that these capacities can be maintained and developed at any stage of life.

Physiotherapy plays a central role in this process. Our expertise lies not only in treating pain and injury, but in understanding how the body functions as a whole system. By focusing on strength, balance, and flexibility, we can help you preserve and enhance your physical resilience over time.

At Cambridgeshire Sports Physio and Back Care, we take a proactive and structured approach to supporting long-term health and independence. Our work in frailty prevention is grounded in clinical evidence and practical experience, with a focus on helping people remain capable, active, and confident in their bodies.
